Blossom Kicks for Kids

Blossom Kicks for Kids was born out of a desire by the National Cherry Blossom Festival and Events DC to create a fresh, youth-focused program that fused creativity, culture, and community—through sneakers. In response, I developed and launched the program, bringing together DC students, local artists, and community partners for an unforgettable design experience.

In year one, elementary school students were invited to design and paint their own Nike Air Force 1s, donated by DTLR. Local artist Alaina Fullmore helped guide students through the creative process during our signature “Shoe Design Day”. The finished sneakers were revealed in an art gallery-style showcase during the Festival, sparking excitement and inspiration.

By year two, the program had grown to include middle and high school students from all eight DC wards. With the support of artists Dez and Swaggy, 63 students transformed their designs into wearable art. Once again, Suite Nation provided the space, and DTLR returned as the footwear sponsor.

Blossom Kicks for Kids is more than a sneaker project—it’s a platform for DC’s youth to express their stories, build confidence, and imagine a future where creativity leads the way.

Blossom Tea Party

Blossom Tea Party was created by the National Cherry Blossom Festival in partnership with Events DC as a heartfelt celebration honoring Washington, DC’s senior residents. Designed to uplift, connect, and celebrate our elders, the program debuted in 2023 at the Congress Heights Senior Wellness Center, delighting 75 seniors with an afternoon of tea, music, and meaningful connection.

In 2024, the event blossomed—moving to the Walter E. Washington Convention Center and welcoming over 400 seniors for an unforgettable soiree. With support from CareFirst BlueCross BlueShield and the DC Department of Aging and Community Living, guests enjoyed a vibrant afternoon filled with fine teas, catered lunch, dancing, and community storytelling.

Blossom Tea Party promotes heritage, social connection, and emotional wellness, creating a cherished annual tradition that honors the rich histories and lasting contributions of DC’s seniors.

Kites in the Classroom

Launched in 2023, Kites in the Classroom began as a small pilot program called Kites with KIPP, bringing the joy of kite making and flying to KIPP DC elementary schools. Building on strong personal relationships with KIPP, I introduced the program to inspire creativity and teach students the science behind kite flying. When Hitachi came on board as a sponsor, the program expanded to include Prince George’s County public schools and was renamed Kites in the Classroom—aligning with Hitachi’s vision and deepening its connection to the National Cherry Blossom Festival’s Blossom Kite Festival.

What started as a small idea has grown tremendously. This year, Kites in the Classroom reached over 600 students across all eight DC wards and two PG County schools, introducing young minds to the magic of flight through hands-on STEM learning, cultural celebration, and artistic expression. By combining physics, creativity, and community, the program continues to foster the next generation of innovators and dreamers—one kite at a time.
